Blenheim to Renwick to Wairau Valley, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc heartland, the 1973 first plantings and 1985 Cloudy Bay launch that defined the global style.
Marlborough is New Zealand's largest wine region: 30000 hectares under vine, 77 percent of national production, and 75 percent Sauvignon Blanc. It occupies the top of the South Island between Cook Strait to the north and the Kaikoura ranges to the south. Three subregions define it. Wairau Valley holds the historic prestige zone with alluvial soils and the Cloudy Bay anchor. Awatere Valley lies south with cooler stonier soils that yield more mineral Sauvignon Blanc. Southern Valleys include Brancott, Omaka and Waihopai with smaller production. First commercial Sauvignon Blanc plantings occurred in 1973 at Montana, now Brancott Estate. The 1985 Cloudy Bay launch by David Hohnen began the export revolution. The Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc profile of passionfruit, gooseberry, cut grass and grapefruit became the style producers worldwide copy.
New Zealand's capital on Cook Strait at the southern tip of the North Island, Te Papa museum, Weta Workshop film legacy, Cuba Street cafes, and ferry access to the South Island.

Three reasons. Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc serves as the global reference with 75 percent of New Zealand wine exports, 65 percent of all Sauvignon Blanc imported to the UK, and 90 percent of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc in United States and Australian markets. The 1985 Cloudy Bay release marked the moment Marlborough gained worldwide recognition. The terroir contrast between Wairau and Awatere valleys delivers structure with warmer alluvial tropical fruit in Wairau against cooler mineral expression in Awatere.

You are the kind if you taste Sauvignon Blanc slowly and note the passionfruit versus mineral shift between valleys, appreciate oak fermented styles such as Cloudy Bay Te Koko or Dog Point Section 94, enjoy cycling between cellar doors, and add a Marlborough Sounds ferry crossing. You are less the kind if you seek only red wine because Marlborough is 75 percent Sauvignon Blanc.
